Who Are We to Talk About God?
Mention God and you are bound to turn someone off. We at the Purity Project know that our header, God can set you free from porn seems oddly out of place. Porn and God? What a juxtaposition! We are also painfully aware that we’re the people who have lived some of the most hypocritical lives. We claimed to be one thing while we were filling our minds and lives with the basest of images and behaviors. We are people who were caught-up in selfishness, anger, resentments and poor judgment. We couldn’t see or hear anything without making something sexual out of it. We objectified the people we saw, cheated on our spouses, became emotionally distant, lived double lives, wrecked our marriages, and made a mess of everything we touched. Who are we to talk about God and why should you listen to anything that we have to say?
We didn’t stay that way.
We changed and we changed for good! If we were the same people that we once were–We’d encourage you to run as far away from us as you could. Though some don’t believe it, people can change, provided they get the power they need to do so. We at the Purity Project have amazingly similar stories. We were living lives that we hated and we found that we couldn’t do anything about them, with any lasting effect, until we gave over the control of our lives to God. In the beginning that was such a paradox for us and we had no idea of how to take this step. We made it much harder than it was.
Discovery 1: God rewards faith, not pain!
All of us were hurting on the inside. We had tried everything that we knew to do to bring about change. We saw counselors and therapists. We made promises that we wanted to keep and could not. We read tons of books and we prayed like nobody’s business! Nothing happened–at least not permanently. We’d change for a small period of time, get our hopes up and fail again and again. Then we all discovered that we could not solve our porn problem on our own. We wanted to, but it was bigger than we were. We learned that we had to come to God in a simple faith that he could do for us what we could not do for ourselves.
Discovery 2: God doesn’t remove the problem unless we choose Him.
This is a huge lesson. If the reason you want to quit porn is to be rid of the pain in your life, we are very doubtful that you’ll be able to “stay stopped” in your endeavor to quit porn. If your reason to quit is based upon choosing to have God in your life, He’ll give you the same power he gave us to quit porn for good! We learned that God allows problems like porn to exist so that we make the conscious choice to choose Him over ourselves. Again, if we want to be rid of porn to solve our pain, marriages, personal problems, etc., we’ll probably fail. That’s because we are still trying to retain control of our lives. If we place our focus upon choosing God, He’ll see to it that we get the power we need to do it!
Discovery 3: When we choose God, he’ll show us the next right step.
Getting your life back from porn is less about the porn and more about learning to undo the subtle choices we’ve been making. Porn is just a manifestation of deeper issues that you don’t know much about. It’s about the choices you’ve been making that makes problems like porn inevitable in your life.
When I first began my journey to freedom from porn, I thought stopping my porn useage was the goal. I have learned that there was so much more. And this was a good thing. Everyday, I learn more about choosing God. As I do, God gives me the power I need to make the choice. When I make the right choice, I learn the next most important step to take and so on. The more I choose God, the further my problem with porno goes away.
We want you to have what we have–not what we had!
None of us would wish the lives we once had upon anyone; but all of us want you to enjoy the blessings of freedom that come from being free of porn and all that goes with it that we now experience every single day. None of us did this on our own. God did it for us. He did what we could not do. All he required was for us to come to him in faith and make the choices that he would show is.
It is easier if you have someone to help you.
Taking this important step isn’t so hard. God doesn’t make it hard to follow him–we just think he does. It’s hard only if we insist on doing things our way rather than letting his power do it for us. If you want to experience this same power that each of us in the Purity Project has experienced and have the changed life you are seeking, why not begin by writing us and joining with a bunch of folks who understand what you’re going through.
